The convergence of financial services, the diversity and complexity of reinsurance programmes, and the global expansion of the marketplace contribute to the continuing need for education and training at all levels in our business.


Professor Robert L Carter OBE, BSc (Econ), D.Phil, FCII, FIRM, Emeritus Professor of Insurance Studies, University of Nottingham started his career with the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, then became Assistant Insurance Manager for the Dunlop Rubber Co Ltd. In 1963 he moved into education as a Lecturer in Insurance and Economics at Brighton College of Technology (now Brighton University). In 1969 he was appointed Lecturer in Industrial Economics at the University of Nottingham, subsequently being promoted to Senior Lecturer. In 1975 he was appointed the Norwich Union Professor of Insurance Studies, a post he held until he retired in 1990. He has lectured around the world and acted as a consultant to the Association of British Insurers, Lloyd's, the OECD, the World Bank, and other bodies. He is the author of many books and articles on insurance, reinsurance and risk management, including textbooks for the Chartered Insurance Institute. He was awarded an OBE in 1991 for services to insurance education and the insurance industry.

Leslie D Lucas, FCII ACIArb - Chief Executive of Pool Re. From 1960 to 1966 he worked in the Accident Department of the Century Insurance Company, and from 1966 to 1972 with Household & General. In 1972 he joined the Mercantile & General. In 1977 he joined NW Re as the Underwriter for Casualty Non-proportional treaty, and in 1989 was appointed General Manager. He joined Pool Re in April 1994 as Chief Executive. He was a member of the ROA executive and a founder Council Member of LIRMA. He was also a member of Sir David Walker's Committee that reported on the Lloyd's LMX problems. He is a joint author of the book "Reinsurance Management". He is a Senior Examiner of the CII and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Insurers.

Nigel Ralph, BA, FCII - is an underwriter for property treaty business at Ace Global Markets. He studied French and Spanish at Nottingham University before completing a teaching certificate at Cambridge. In 1979 he joined the Mercantile & General, working in various marketing and underwriting roles. In 1983 he won the CII's Bain Dawes scholarship and spent three months working in the Mexican market. He was representative in Japan from 1987 to 1988. Since then he has underwritten property and agricultural business in the London market.
